2025 - Today: YTT Psychosocial Support & Empowerment Program for girls and women
Impact:
Since mid-2025, YTT has been laying the essential foundations for a comprehensive psychosocial support and empowerment program for Afghan girls and women, that began at the start of 2026. In a context where access to education and safe community spaces for women and girls remains severely restricted, YTT has focused on coordination, partnership-building, YTT training, and manual co-design to ensure that the program can operate safely and effectively within Afghanistan’s complex environment.
The initiative will begin as a pilot phase delivered in person, by a team of YTT trained psychologists, through a carefully structured network of clandestine schools for girls and young women across multiple provinces. These classes provide rare protected spaces where participants can continue their education while also receiving structured psychosocial support designed to address trauma, isolation, anxiety, and the long-term psychological consequences of conflict and systemic exclusion.
The pilot phase will integrate educational continuity with empowerment modules, mental health support sessions, and capacity-building. By equipping local teachers with trauma-informed tools and gender-sensitive methodologies, YTT aims not only to support girl-students directly, but also to strengthen the resilience of the women teachers who serve as anchors within their communities.
The subsequent phase, contingent on many conditions, will focus on a nationwide scale-up. The objective is to reach up to 3,000 schoolgirls and 190 teachers through as many as 150 clandestine classes operating across 22 provinces. This expansion will significantly increase access to structured psychosocial care and educational empowerment for girls who would otherwise remain excluded.
